(Zuccarini, 1832)

Other names: Allthorn, Crucifixion Thorn

Koeberlinia spinosa is restricted to the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts in northern and central Mexico (south to Zacatecas and Querétaro) and the adjacent United States (California to Texas). It grows in thornscrub and deserts at 0-2,100 m. This is a shrub, 1-10 m in height, spreading or globose. The stem is green and branching; the tip of each branch tapers into a long thorn, 25-80 cm long. The leaves are rudimentary. The flowers are white to greenish-white, with 4 sepals and 4 petals. The fruit is a shiny black berry. K. spinosa flowers from February to May in lowlands, and in June-July in higher elevations.
